Navakanu Academy

Music as a way of knowing

Nāda Brahma — sound is the universe. In the ancient Indian understanding, sound is not merely something we hear. It is a fundamental vibration through which existence reveals itself. Before music becomes melody, rhythm or song, there is Nāda — the primordial movement of sound.

At Navakanu Academy, we approach music from this wider perspective.

The handpan may be our instrument, but music is our language. We use it to play, sing, improvise and compose — but also to listen, observe and understand. Rhythm teaches us about movement. Melody teaches us about relationship. Harmony teaches us how different voices can coexist. Counterpoint reveals the beauty of independent lines moving together. Silence teaches us space.

Our musical vocabulary draws from many traditions. From Hindustani classical music, we explore Sargam, Taal, Raga, phrasing and improvisation. From the Western tradition, we explore solfège, harmony, counterpoint, intervals, scales, voice leading and composition. These are not rigid systems to memorise, but different lenses through which the same vast world of sound can be perceived.

Over years of teaching, we have developed our own three-layer approach to notation and musical understanding — allowing intuition and structure, ear and intellect, tradition and experimentation to exist together.

Because ultimately, learning music is not only learning how to make sound.
It is learning how to listen to existence
— and discovering your own voice within it.

About Sina

A life shaped by sound. SinaSiav began studying music as a child and has spent more than two decades moving between classical traditions, folk instruments, contemporary production and the evolving language of the handpan. His musical world brings together handpan, bansuri, didgeridoo, Persian and Indian traditions, looping and electronic soundscapes — with an approach rooted in both discipline and improvisation. From intimate gatherings to international stages, the intention remains the same: to create music that leaves space for people to feel something.
